Magee says: A few years back it was not a common thing for a live sound mixer to engineer a record or a record mixer to go on the road to mix live. But today some very skilled people pull it off, beautifully.

Back in the day, I had a several year run as Sound Designer at The Hollywood Bowl. I am thankful to Ara Guzelimian and Ernest Fleischmann for the invitation to come to a Bowl morning rehearsal and audition a concept I was successfully implementing down the road with the Pacific Symphony at Irvine Meadows (with Sound Image.) For the Los Angeles Philharmonic rehearsal, we set up a remote recording control room on the back of the shell. We mic'ed the orchestra like a recording session. Then we sent a mix to front of house and they put it into the system. It was an awesome moment. The Hollywood Bowl went from Schoeps Boundary Layer mics with heavy screen covers, to new micing and mixing techniques that would change the venue, and many other orchestral venues , forever. We built an awesome mic collection over the years. Sound Image built a high quality sound system each year, as administrators allowed, to get the Bowl competitive with the touring sound standards of the day.

I consulted to start, then got into a schedule of mixing FOH on 90% of 100+ shows every summer. Come end of each season in September, I would jump right back into a feature film. Yup it turned several heads.

Before I left the venue, with the retirement of Ernest Fleischmann, the Bowl stage renovation was a great project to get off the ground.

I still love live mixing and have great admiration for the mixers and the evolution of the systems. 2020 has killed the live performance industry but I'm sure not alone, longing for the magic of great live performances to return.
